About Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient healing art that originated in China, over 5000 yrs ago and is still in use today. TCM was the sole system of medicine in China and it was used to benefit animals as well as humans. In most parts of China TCM is still used in preference to western medicine and is part of the mainstream hospitals. There are many TCM veterinary hospitals that solely use TCM, as they find it to be more effective than conventional medicine to prevent the occurrence of illness.

TCM is a completely holistic system of medicine. Unlike modern western or herbal medicine systems it provides its own method of identifying the underlying cause of illness often detecting the imbalance in the body before they have a chance to cause serious illness. It does this by establishing the state of the various internal organs and disease patterns. If there is an imbalance, the whole body will be affected and disease patterns will emerge.

TCM is becoming increasingly popular because every treatment is tailored individually for the patient. There are no generic medicines for each illness. Each patient be they pet or animal must be treated as an individual, their unique pattern identified and the imbalances addressed.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is applied by using extremely fine sterile needles to selected acupuncture points on the body. The needles are inserted painlessly and a pleasant sensation of Qi (energy) is experienced. Acupuncture is a very relaxing non-pharmaceutical treatment, which can be used to treat many different ailments.

Points are selected according to the symptoms of the patient. There are over 500 acupuncture points on the body. The acupuncture points are located along meridians or channels, of which there are 12 main ones, which run bilaterally along the body.  By using selected points the body can be brought into balance and the symptoms relieved.
