About Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient healing art that originated in China, over 5000 yrs ago and is still being used today. TCM was the only system of medicine in China and it was used on animals as well as humans. In China TCM is the first line of treatment to animals over western medicine. There are many TCM veterinary hospitals that solely use TCM, as they find it to be more effective than conventional medicine and also as preventative medicine. .

TCM is a completely holistic system of medicine. TCM can establish the state of the various internal organs and disease patterns. If there is an imbalance, the whole body will be affected and disease patterns will emerge.
TCM consists of Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Qi Gong, Tai Chi and Tui-na (Chinese Massage).
TCM differs from other healing modalities. TCM is made up of highly complexed methods, which are very effectively used, in our pet services.
TCM treats the root cause of disease as well as the presenting symptoms, which is why TCM is unique. Many other types of medicine deliver the same treatment for the same disease. TCM is becoming increasingly popular because every treatment is tailored individually for the patient. Click here for a Complete Online Consultation for your pet.
Chinese Herbal Medicine Chinese herbs are gaining increasing popularity, due to the positive results of herbal science research on humans that have been taking place in Australia on Hepatitis C, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, eczema etc. These studies have been well publicised in the media. Chinese Herbal medicine can be used to treat a wide range of disorders, which may be difficult to treat in other modalities.
There are also many studies that have been done on animal disorders that have shown many positive results which is why TCM is becoming more readily acceptable.
There is many a chinese medicine herb that has been researched and shown to have antiviral, anticancer properties etc. Chinese herbal medicines traditionally, were dispensed using raw herbs. Chinese herbs now come in pills, capsules, granules, liquids, plasters, powders and creams that can be taken internally or applied externally.
Chinese Herbal medicine is always prescribed in a formula or combination of Chinese herbs to keep the formula balanced. This also has the ability to eliminate side effects and strengthen the healing action of the herbs. Modern science tends to use singular medicines in large doses, resulting in side effects and immunity to the drug, this is now happening with antibiotics .By using herbal formulas people do not become immune to the herbs. Because these herbs have been used for thousands of years we know their actions and they are very safe to use when used traditionally by a qualified Chinese Herbalist.
Chinese Herbal medicine is so much more than a herbal nutrition supplement - it is nourishment for the mind, body and soul and is used as often in China for prevention of sickness as it is for sickness itself.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is applied by using extremely fine sterile needles to selected acupuncture points on the body. The needles are inserted painlessly and a pleasant sensation of Qi (chee) is experienced. Acupuncture is a very relaxing non-pharmaceutical treatment, which can be used to treat many different ailments.
Points are selected according to the symptoms of the patient. There are over 500 acupuncture points on the body. The acupuncture points are located along meridians or channels, of which there are 12 main ones, which run bilaterally along the body. By using selected points the body can be brought into balance and the symptoms relieved. Kamila is a horse acupuncture specialist.
Animal acupuncture is becoming increasingly popular due to it’s effectiveness as a non pharmaceutical treatment. We use acupuncture on cat’s, dog’s and horses in our clinic and find that animals respond very well to treatments.Despite having other positive effects on health problems it also seems to have an obvious effect on an animal’s emotions. Many owners notice their pet’s emotional behaviour change after treatments. We believe it is because animals do not have the same emotional blockages that we have as humans, which is why they seem to be able to release any emotional problem they have very easily.
