About Traditional Chinese Medicine
for Animals

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient healing art that originated in China, over 5000 yrs ago and is still in use today. TCM was the sole system of medicine in China and it was used to benefit animals as well as humans. In most parts of China TCM is still used in preference to western medicine and is part of the mainstream hospitals. There are many TCM veterinary hospitals that solely use TCM, as they find it to be more effective than conventional medicine to prevent the occurrence of illness.

TCM is a completely holistic system of medicine. Unlike modern western or herbal medicine systems it provides its own method of identifying the underlying cause of illness often detecting the imbalance in the body before they have a chance to cause serious illness. It does this by establishing the state of the various internal organs and disease patterns. If there is an imbalance, the whole body will be affected and disease patterns will emerge.

TCM consists of Chinese Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture, Qi Gong, Tai Chi and Tui-na (Chinese Massage).

TCM differs widely from other forms of natural medicine in that it uses Traditional pattern identification from the symptoms described. This allows it to identify the underlying cause of the illness and treat the whole animal rather than just the symptoms. Modern herbal medicine uses the same medical symptom diagnosis as vets and therefore can only treat the same illnesses. By using pattern identification instead of illness diagnosis TCM is not boxed in, in the way it sees your pet but can look at the big picture and treat the whole animal to achieve long term results.
TCM treats the root cause of disease as well as the presenting symptoms, which is why TCM is unique. Many other types of medicine deliver the same treatment for the same disease. TCM is becoming increasingly popular because every treatment is tailored individually for the patient. There are no generic medicines for each illness. Each patient be they pet or animal must be treated as an individual, their unique pattern identified and the imbalances addressed.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbs are gaining increasing popularity, due to the positive results of herbal science research on humans that have been taking place in Australia particularly on serious illnesses like Hepatitis C, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, eczema and the use of herbal antiviral. These studies have been well publicized in the media. Chinese Herbal medicine can be used to treat a wide range of disorders, which may be difficult to treat in other modalities.

In China there are also many studies that have been done on animal disorders that have shown many positive results which has contributed to Chinese Herbal Medicine becoming more accepted.

There are many Chinese medicine herb that have been researched and shown to have antiviral, anticancer properties etc. Chinese herbal medicines traditionally, were dispensed using raw herbs. Chinese herbs now come in pills, capsules, granules, liquids, plasters, powders and creams that can be taken internally or applied externally.

Chinese Herbal medicine is always prescribed in a formula or combination of Chinese herbs to keep the formula balanced. This also has the ability to eliminate side effects and strengthen the healing action of the herbs. Modern science tends to use singular medicines in large doses, resulting in side effects and immunity to the drugs as is now happening with antibiotics. By using herbal formulas people do not become immune to the herbs. Because these herbs have been used for thousands of years we know their actions and they are very safe to use when used traditionally by a qualified Chinese Herbalist.

Chinese Herbal medicine is so much more than an herbal nutrition supplement - it is nourishment for the mind, body and soul and is used as often in China to prevent sickness as to treat them.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is applied by using extremely fine sterile needles to selected acupuncture points on the body. The needles are inserted painlessly and a pleasant sensation of Qi (energy) is experienced. Acupuncture is a very relaxing non-pharmaceutical treatment, which can be used to treat many different ailments.

Points are selected according to the symptoms of the patient. There are over 500 acupuncture points on the body. The acupuncture points are located along meridians or channels, of which there are 12 main ones, which run bilaterally along the body.  By using selected points the body can be brought into balance and the symptoms relieved. Kamila spent a great deal of time working as a horse acupuncture specialist before deciding to specialize in herbal medicine for animals.

Animal acupuncture is becoming increasingly popular due to its effectiveness as a non pharmaceutical treatment. We have used acupuncture on cats, dogs and horses in our clinic and find that animals respond very well to these treatments. Despite having other positive effects on health problems it also seems to have an obvious effect on an animal’s emotions. Many owners notice their pet’s emotional behavior changes after treatments. We believe it is because animals do not have the same emotional blockages that we have as humans that they seem to be able to release any emotional problem they have very easily.

Online Pet Herbs

Online Pet Herbs now specializes in Chinese Herbal Medicine for pets as we feel this allows us to benefit the greatest number of animals.

Generally speaking animals respond quickly to treatments.  All of our herbal formulas come as a one month’s supply of herbs, regardless of whether it is for a horse, dog, cat, ferret, mouse, rat or chimpanzee.

Acute conditions may only need one or 2 courses of treatment but for a chronic condition you may be looking at 6-12 months of treatment for it to have long lasting results. It varies from animal to animal and normally you can tell more accurately by how the animal responds during the first month.

We aim to cure illnesses and completely remove the underlying cause of the illness so there is no recurrence. Very occasionally and usually with older animals an animal may require maintenance treatments for their rest of their life but we try to avoid this and instead focus on creating a healthy animal that is not dependent on any herbal nutrition supplement.

We encourage you to try our online consultation, for a unique herbal product designed specifically for your pet’s constitution. Online Pet Herbs offers pet medication designed for a specific pet symptom or disease pattern in Chinese herb medicine.
