Frequently Asked Questions

My pet is currently taking pet medication from the vet. Will the Chinese herbs interfere with the vet’s medication?
The Chinese herbs are very safe and should not cause any interactions with the vet medication. They are very safe and are all natural. If you notice any new pet symptom you should ask a vet to have a look at it.

How are you different to any other alternative medicine retailer in the pet industry?
Online pet herbs uses Traditional Chinese Medicine, we use only 100% natural unprocessed plants, and we use herbs in a combination called a Chinese herbal formula to eliminate side effects and strengthen the results. Our diagnosis system is based on Chinese medicine, unlike for example, naturopaths that use the same system as western medicine. TCM is one of the only 100% holistic systems of medicine because you can treat almost any disorder. Because of our ability to read the body’s imbalances we can determine what the cause of disease is so we are not only treating a pet symptom but the source of the problem. If we compare the body to a tree: the leaves of a tree are the symptom of disease or the superficial problem, but the roots of a tree are the basis of the disease. You cannot grow healthy plants in bad soil. To treat the body and make it better you need to address the roots and the soil, not just the leaves, being the symptoms.

Are the herbs easy to give to my pet?
Yes whatever pet product you receive from online pet herbs, it comes with clear instructions regarding the dosages. The herbal powder is sprinkled in the pet’s meals twice a day with a measuring spoon that is provided with the herbal formula. Products are available in Australia only.

Can I reorder a herbal formula that you have prescribed for my pet?
Yes, if you were very happy with a herbal formula that was prescribed with a consultation just purchase any herbal formula, selecting the correct weight/animal type, and then email us to let us know you want a repeat. The prices are the same for all formulas, by weight/animal type. As we are a pet supply store we keep your consultation records so that it is easy to repeat a prescription.

Do you recommend having repeat consultations?
Yes we do, as the body changes during treatment, formulas may need to be changed or modified to suit the individual. When we treat the cause of the problem we use many tonic herbs to change the way the body’s internal organ energy flows. With Chinese herbal medicine we normally start treating acute disorders, as they are quick to treat and then go directly to the source of the body’s disease.

Is there any time I should stop giving my pet herbal treatment?
Yes, if they develop any acute disorders like a cold, digestive upset, just until or symptoms are gone and then recommence. If you are unsure contact us.

The reason being that if your pet is taking tonic herbs whilst having for example, a cold, it will linger in the body for much longer. This is due to the fact that Chinese tonics like ginseng enter the kidney meridians in the body and if that channel is being treated whilst an acute cold is taking place then it may travel deeper into the body.

This is a common mistake naturopaths make that use Chinese herbs. There are very strict rules in regards to situations that you would prescribe Chinese herbs and it is based on TCM theory and knowledge of what meridians the particular herbs enter and what herbs are best in combination together, along with whether it is cold or hot in nature etc. Without this knowledge Chinese herbs should never be prescribed.

Naturopaths commonly prescribe ginseng for the flu as well as astragalus. If they were trained in TCM they would never do that as it makes the symptoms worse and linger for a long time.

What happens if my pet becomes pregnant, do I continue with the herbs?
Contact us, as it will depend on the herbal formula. Many herbs can be taken during pregnancy and actually benefit greatly both the mother and baby. There are many herbs that are contradicted in pregnancy, it is best to contact us.

How successful is a Chinese herbal treatment without acupuncture?
In China, Chinese Herbal medicine is used solely for around 85% of cases. This is significant when you consider that in China they use TCM in all the hospitals and doctors’ surgeries. Acupuncture is used much less frequently.

The reason being is that treatment with herbal medicine is generally much shorter in duration and can treat a broader range of disorders than just acupuncture alone. When Acupuncture is used in combination with Chinese herbal medicine the duration of treatment can be even shorter.

It is funny that in Australia we consider Acupuncture solely as Chinese medicine when really it is just a fraction of the traditional system. By using Chinese herbal medicine we can tonify and clear pathogens out of the body much more effectively. This can be done with acupuncture but it would take much longer. It is like the short cut, the most effective direct treatment.

That is why in China it is used so much more than acupuncture in a clinical situation.

Acupuncture is excellent with physical injuries, central nervous disorders, pain management and internal disorders. In our clinics we use both as much as possible. As we do lots of horse acupuncture at our clinics, we do find that acupuncture is great with acute problems but we always prescribe Chinese herbal medicine to ensure that the problem doesn’t recur.
